DAY 01CITY & GOOD FOOD

A slow start in Portland

Pearl District · NW 23rd · the waterfront
Today’s itinerary: Walk + streetcarSleep: Portland

Your day at a glance

  1. Start with coffee and browse Powell’s City of Books. Coava is still an option; for a little Moroccan taste, add Ovation Coffee & Tea before exploring the Pearl District.
  2. Use the streetcar for the Pearl District, NW Portland and downtown. From the Pearl, walk toward NW 23rd Avenue for shops and plenty of restaurant choices.
  3. Walk the waterfront, especially its north side, then visit the International Rose Test Garden. The streetcar does not go to the garden; use a bus or rideshare for this stop.
  4. For a longer outing, ride the streetcar to South Waterfront, take in the view from the OHSU aerial tram, and follow part of the riverfront greenway south toward The Old Spaghetti Factory.
  5. Finish with dinner at a food-cart pod, PDX Sliders, or Al Hawr for a Middle Eastern experience, then enjoy a neighborhood stroll.
Streetcar & affordable places to stay

Explore by streetcar

The NS Line links NW Portland, the Pearl, downtown and the South Waterfront; A/B Loop services also cross the river. Allow roughly 10–30 min for central-city rides, plus waiting. A streetcar-only fare is $2 for 2½ hours; TriMet fares also work.

Good-value stays in Northwest Portland

Start with Nob Hill / the Alphabet District and nearby Slabtown for neighborhood cafés and convenient exploring. These are practical bases; no neighborhood is guaranteed safe. Check recent guest feedback about the immediate block and ask the hotel about evening routes.

Budget targets below are estimates per room/night in USD, before tax—not current offers. Dates and availability can push rates higher. Open the hotel link for an exact quote.

Silver Cloud Hotel · Portland ↗
Plan about $130–190 / night

NW Vaughn near NW 23rd. Free parking can reduce the total cost if you have a car; use a bus or walk to connect with the streetcar.

Inn at Northrup Station ↗
Plan about $170–240 / night

On the streetcar line in the Alphabet District. Suites, continental breakfast, an on-site parking pass and streetcar tickets are included—useful savings for a family.

NW Portland Hostel · private rooms ↗
Plan about $90–150 / night

A lower-budget alternative in the Alphabet District. Private rooms are available, mostly with shared bathrooms; confirm the room and bathroom setup before booking.

Food, coffee & activities

Choose what fits your day. Activities are optional; check hours, menus, admission, and reservations through the links.

Portland · EAT
PDX Sliders

Casual burgers and sliders; choose the Sellwood, Division, or Williams location that fits your day.

Pearl District · RANYA’S COFFEE PICK
Ovation Coffee & Tea

Start with Moroccan mint tea or a Moroccan-spiced coffee for a little taste of Morocco before exploring the Pearl.

Northwest Portland · WALK + EAT
NW 23rd Avenue

Walk from the Pearl toward this lively neighborhood street, with boutiques, cafés and plenty of restaurant choices along the way.

Downtown Portland · WALK
Tom McCall Waterfront Park

Stroll the west bank of the Willamette, especially the north end near the Steel Bridge and Pearl District connection.

South Waterfront · VIEW + WALK
OHSU aerial tram & the greenway

Ride the tram for a city view, then follow the paved South Waterfront Greenway. Continue toward The Old Spaghetti Factory only if you want a longer walk.

South Waterfront · RANYA’S DINNER PICK
Al Hawr

End with Lebanese and Middle Eastern flavors near the riverfront for a meal that feels a little closer to home.

Good to knowThis is a menu for your arrival day, not a checklist. Leave the car parked for city exploring. NW 23rd is walkable from the Pearl, but the South Waterfront is easier by streetcar. The aerial tram is closed Sundays and observed holidays; check its hours before going.

Streetcar routes & schedules

Less driving. More being there.

This route skips Crater Lake and eastern Oregon so your week stays unhurried. Allow extra time for stops; winter needs a different mountain plan.

BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD
