A TWO-DAY OREGON ESCAPE · FROM MY OWN TRAVELS
A weekend along the McKenzie River and Bend.
Waterfalls, crystal-clear water, Bend mornings, mountain views and alpacas—all in one beautiful loop from Portland.
This is one of those Oregon weekends that feels much longer than two days. The drive moves from forest and waterfalls to sunny Central Oregon, with plenty of time to slow down at the water. These are places I have personally enjoyed, and this is how I would put them together.

A quick pause at Detroit Lake
About 2 hours from Portland via North Santiam Highway (Highway 22)

Leave Portland early and follow North Santiam Highway—Highway 22—toward the mountains. Detroit Lake makes an easy first stop to stretch your legs, take in the reservoir and begin the weekend at a slower pace. Keep this one brief because you still have a beautiful waterfall walk ahead.

About 53 minutes from Detroit Dam

Sahalie Falls is powerful from the first viewpoint, but don’t stop there. Continue along the river trail toward Koosah Falls. Between them, the McKenzie runs through mossy forest in shades of blue and turquoise that hardly look real.
My favorite part: the water and forest views between the two falls are just as memorable as the waterfalls themselves. Wear shoes with grip because the trail can be wet.

The falls are only part of the view—the river, forest and smaller cascades make the entire walk worth slowing down for.

Picnic and paddle at Clear Lake
About 5 minutes from Sahalie Falls

Clear Lake is only a short drive from the falls and is where I would slow the day down. Bring a picnic, rent a rowboat or kayak when rentals are operating, or launch your own paddleboard where permitted. Beneath the clear water, you can see remnants of an ancient forest that was submerged when lava blocked the river.

About 30 minutes from Clear Lake

Drive east toward Black Butte Ranch for golden evening light, meadow views and the Central Oregon mountains. After enjoying the area, stay overnight in Sisters or continue to Bend for more hotel and dinner choices.

Breakfast beside the Deschutes River

Start the day with breakfast at Currents at the Riverhouse. When the weather is nice, ask for outdoor seating and enjoy a slow morning beside the Deschutes River before heading into downtown Bend.

Spend a little time walking through downtown Bend, browsing the shops and enjoying the riverfront before getting back on the road. Keep the morning relaxed so you still have plenty of time for the ranch and Smith Rock.

About 35 minutes from downtown Bend

Continue to Crescent Moon Ranch in Terrebonne. Wander past the alpaca pastures, enjoy the mountain views and stop inside the boutique. Feeding depends on the ranch’s current visitor setup, so confirm the day’s rules when you arrive.
Choose your view at Smith Rock State Park
About 6 minutes from Crescent Moon Ranch

Finish with the cliffs and winding Crooked River at Smith Rock. You do not need to tackle the hardest trail to appreciate the park: walk down toward the river, choose a comfortable section and turn back when it feels right. If you want a strenuous climb, research Misery Ridge before your visit and start early.
Good to know: Smith Rock is an Oregon state park, and a day-use parking permit is required. Bring water and expect little shade during warm weather.
